Carson “Mac” McPherson and John Fielding Smith

Mr. John Fielding Smith….a man of many spells and incantations. Stories, jokes, chivalry and charm, that was what John was all about. John served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy. He enjoyed a long career as a co-owner at Falls Pharmacy.

Every Sunday morning, John would turn on CBC radio and listen to classic music. The staff particularly remembers the hours of “Marches” for the entire Sunday shift. He was a kind man and one of our fond memories about John was that he did not want to see anyone do without their meds and was known to hold a “watch” or a “drivers’ license” until the cash to pay was available. Many days there were customers who came in to chat with John. He was regarded as quite a gentleman and a scholar and also a dedicated family man. He will be missed by all who knew him. John passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.

One of the original four pharmacists…..that’s what “Mac” was! Mr. Carson McPherson was known to all as Mac and what a personality he had. Mac worked at the Falls Pharmacy location that was at Drummond Rd. and Valley Way. What fond memories we have of him.

Little known to most people was what a marvelous artist and painter Mac was. He kept that talent a secret. Mac was very well-known as a musician and he volunteered a lot of his time at the Legion. He was also one of the organists who played during the Niagara Falls Flyers hockey games.

Another secret passion he had was inventing little gadgets that would make life easier in one way or another. He was a man of few words, but a creative soul in so many ways.

One day, while he was doing the daily deposit, some coffee spilled on all the money, so he meticulously cleaned off each bill and hung it above the counter to dry.

Sixty hours a week you could find Mac dispensing prescriptions, but the rest of the time, he was out there entertaining others in more ways than one.

We are always looking for good and talented people
